Can a bookkeeper prepare tax returns?

Generally no. Bookkeepers record transactions and organize financial data; but tax return preparation requires specific licensing and expertise beyond bookkeeping. Only CPAs; enrolled agents; and tax preparers with proper credentials can legally file tax returns. Bookkeepers can organize the data to support tax preparation; but they cannot sign and file returns on your behalf.
